The Festival of Movie Parodies: Leo DiCaprio’s Russian Twin is in, How About You?

I always thought that Jack Black’s best gift to humanity was his spectacular humorous rock-project Tenacious D. However, I have to admit that now the opinion of the band’s position has a big competitor…

Sweding is a process of creating amateur remakes of famous movies.

Black indirectly founded a movie-lover’s trend and inspired a movement, which appeared after the movie Be Kind Rewind in which he played the main role. In the story, Black’s character is magnetized after fighting a powerhouse and inadvertently erases all the movies from the videotapes in his friend’s video rental store. After this accident, they try to restore the film collection together, shooting remakes of the original films.

Nowadays, shooting remakes of famous movies in a homemade style is called sweding. The main requirement is to repeat the frame formulation and directing idea and the rest is a complete freedom of creativity.

Here is a sweded trailer for Jurassic World side-by-side with the original version as an example:

Sweding is now about to transform into a separate subculture. Contests and festivals happen all over the world and the gold-domed city has taken this honor.

Sweding has come to Moscow, guys! The first international festival of movie parodies will take place at Vinzavod on August 6. The jury will include Irina Gorbacheva, Andrey Merzlikin, Maxim Virtogan, chief editor of Kinopoisk.ru Mikhail Klochkov and famous vloggers. The finalists will receive awesome prizes—an opportunity to study at the Moscow School of New Cinema in workshops of Clim Shipenko and Pavel Bardin.

If you feel the talent bursting inside you, or if you already have a parody of Harry Potter with your mom’s lipstick on your forehead and a neighbor’s Labrador starring as a hippogriff in your portfolio, you can still apply to participate. Just remember—the length can’t exceed 3 minutes and you can’t use professional video editing programs or original soundtracks.

It is simply impossible to miss this event! The fact alone, that you will see a sweded version of Titanic with Leonardo DiCaprio’s famous Russian twin tells you—save the date!

You can buy tickets on the site of the festival or win them in Moskvaer’s contest: just follow both Moskvaer’s Facebook page and the page of the festival, then tag the person you want to accompany you in the comments of the embedded post below.
