Breakfast has always been the main meal of the day for me and the most important socio-cultural ritual at the same time. But only when I found myself in such a country as Italy, where the maximum of what you can get in the morning is a chocolate croissant and a ristretto, did I fully realize the value of “normal” complete breakfasts. In Moscow people know things about those, and restaurants pay respect both to morning hunger and a modern tradition of Sunday ‘breakfast meetings’ with friends.
In the main breakfast cafés and restaurants of Moscow, spaces for 11AM on Sundays are usually booked in advance, at least a day before, while the event itself can be foretasted starting as early as Friday evening. Because a real breakfast is not just a five minute thing with a coffee and bun on the run, but a prolonged junket, and likely in the company of friends.
So I hasten to share with you some spots, where, in my experience, you can spend your best breakfast meals.
The Mecca of breakfasts, not only because of the decent selection of dishes and for serving breakfast all day, but also the atmosphere: Friends Forever is a glorious bright nest, almost like a home, but there’s always fresh coffee and something to eat. Coffee portions are as large as I love (so that you may drink it all the way up until lunch) and usually decorated with lovely patterns.
The California scramble with salmon and avocado is my undoubted favorite at this cafe. If you are in the mood for something sweet, boldly order pancakes with maple syrup (It’s going to be real American pancakes in their classical serving) or Whoopy-Cookies, an ode to which I already sang in another article.

I envy everyone who lives in the vicinity of this heavenly place, which is most suitable for a blissful morning on the weekend. Breakfast here can be selected at random–you will find any choice to be the best. Yogurt with oatmeal cookie crumbs, rice porridge with fresh berries, cheesecake, mini pancakes with sour cream and strawberry toppings… Mmm! The only thing at “Schastye”, that perhaps, to my taste, is inferior to Friends Forever from is the coffee. But this is fully compensated by the view from the terrace.

Readymade is a salvation for those who live in the area of the Academicheskaya metro station, enjoys a tasty and inexpensive meal, and is up for takeaways. The cafe has a sort of ‘couloir’ atmosphere (on the weekends, guests come and spend time here with books and laptops, but when you visit for the first time, you might feel initially as an unexpected guest) and the enviable culinary enthusiasm–every week the guys start a new morning menu, without being limited by just traditional eggs and cheese pancakes (which, however, are excellent!). So, in June, the breakfast menu consists of asparagus with poached eggs, eggs, baked with curry and a donut with cucumber and suluguni and a puff donut with custard.

Two phrases: complete breakfast and unlimited coffee. Starlite is a popular place for expats and lovers of powerful American breakfasts, from eggs Benedict to pancakes, from burgers to various kinds of deeply-respected-by-me combo-breakfasts. The interior plays an importa role in thiscase—the diner features an invigorating atmosphere, created in the style of classic American films, with red pillars, musical devices and large siphons of soda. Keep in mind–the interior is just as important as the food itself. Fans of the glorious light nests might find Starlite “too American”.

One of the few places where you can eat simple modern Russian food for reasonable prices. For breakfast, it means porridge with dried fruit, cottage cheese, cheese pancakes, French toast with milk or–my favorite–a mountain of sweet pancakes with condensed milk. It’s a super cute cafe, from which you can take a pleasant stroll to the Kremlin after breakfast.
